Fisheries and Transparency
Coastal countries face a complex challenge: ensuring that fisheries and fish trade contribute to the income, employment, food and nutrition of millions of people, while conserving marine biodiversity for future generations.
Problems We Face
Poor governance of fisheries, causing overexploitation and unfair sharing of benefits. Between them:
- Corruption
- limited, delayed, partial and often inaccessible information about the fisheries sector
- illegal fishing
The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) helps countries overcome these challenges by providing internationally recognized procedures in order to achieve and maintain high levels of transparency in the management of the marine fisheries sector and the activities of fishers and fishing companies.
